MoBay’s Gilbert relieved to extend unbeaten run with Harbour View draw
Although Montego Bay United (MBU) improved their unbeaten streak to 10 games, Head Coach Xavier Gilbert believes it will be a challenge to continue their impressive run in the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League.
The league leaders came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Harbour View FC at the Harbour View Stadium on Sunday to hit the 50-point mark.
Harbour View Captain Trayvone Reid struck twice in the 10th and 45th minutes, but Montego Bay captain Lucas Correa cancelled them out with goals in minutes 39 and 82.
MBU played the majority of the second half with 10 players as winger Kimani Arbouine was shown a red card in the 56th minute.
Despite grabbing a point, Gilbert says his team should have managed the game better.
“I didn’t think we thought out a lot of the proceedings well today, hence why we were on the back foot,” he said.
“Harbour View manage to rise to the occasion whenever they’re playing teams in the top half of the table. We played them earlier, we know how deadly they are on the set-pieces. They scored four goals against us on set-pieces the last game — we made mention of Trayvon and how lethal he is, and we fell right into the trap so for those things, I’m disappointed. But nevertheless, I’m happy that we got something out of the game.”
Montego Bay haven’t lost a game since their defeat to Mount Pleasant at the end of December.
Since then, they’ve registered seven wins and three draws as they continue to stay firmly atop the table.
However, Gilbert believes their impressive run will be hard to preserve because of the demands of managing the players’ physical condition.
“We have some injuries and we still want to rotate to keep the players fresh. It’s kind of mixing what you do in training, how you train, how you prepare,” he said. “We’re also the most travelled team. We travel sometimes twice a week and we know how difficult that is in terms of kilometres from where we’re travelling.”
“So it’s managing all of those procedures, the recovery part of things and the nutritional part but we try to do our best and ensure that we have them available and hopefully we can continue on that path and hopefully we can get goals right around from everybody.”
Harbour View remain in the relegation zone in 13th but head coach Lenworth “Teacha” Hyde said he’s pleased with the team’s progress since he joined in January.
“We have talented players here. But some of them are in the (national) under-20s and under-18s. So we were a bit short today. We have some injuries, so we could only make one change. Last game we didn’t make any change so, we are waiting on those players to get back and build a cohesive unit. But I love what I’ve seen and they are adapting to the system of play that I’m implementing here,” Hyde said.
