WI Women falter in run chase as Sri Lanka clinch series
ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC) — Jannillea Glasgow’s brave effort with the bat fell just short for the second-consecutive match, as Sri Lanka Women recorded a tense 14-run win over West Indies Women on Sunday to clinch the One-Day International series with a match remaining.
Glasgow struck an even half-century, her second of the series, but West Indies Women were dismissed for 194 in 48 overs in pursuit of Sri Lanka’s total of 208 in 47.1 overs at the National Stadium.
It gave the visitors an unassailable 2-0 lead in the best-of-three series, with the final match scheduled to be held on Wednesday at the same venue.
The West Indies’ top order failed to navigate Sri Lanka’s spinning trio of Sugandika Kumari, Inoka Ranaweera and Dewmi Vihanga, and found themselves precariously placed at 93 for five in the 26th over.
Vihanga claimed the wicket of captain and star batter Hayley Matthews for 13 and four balls later without a run added, Kumari had Qiana Joseph caught for 16 to leave the score 30 for two.
Shemaine Campbelle and Stafanie Taylor tried to rebuild the innings during a 44-run partnership for the third wicket, until Ranaweera had the former caught behind for 27.
Chinelle Henry made just four before becoming Kumari’s second wicket, and when Ranaweera had Campbelle stumped for 30, West Indies Women were in serious trouble.
Deandra Dottin was then controversially given out for obstructing the field after catching a ball with her glove that rebounded off her bat, and three runs later Aaliyah Alleyne was back in the pavilion after scoring a solitary run to put Sri Lanka in the ascendancy with the score 119 for seven.
Fresh from scoring a maiden ODI half-century in the opener, Glasgow added 27 runs with Shawnisha Hector and then a further 45 with Afy Fletcher to revive the run chase and give the home side an outside chance of pulling off a memorable victory.
However, with West Indies requiring 17 runs from 21 balls, Ranaweera claimed the important wicket of Fletcher for 20.
Captain Chamari Athapaththu then wrapped up the match three runs later by dismissing Fletcher for the topscore of 50 off 69 balls, which included five boundaries.
Kumari (3-38) and Ranaweera (3-44) led the way for Sri Lanka while Vihanga took 2-33.
Earlier, after being winning the toss and sending the visitors in to bat, the West Indies bowlers did well to restrict them to a below par total after their top order gave them a strong start.
Following the early loss of opener Hasini Perera, Athapaththu, who made 32, Harshitha Samarawickrama (35) and Player-of-the-Match Vishmi Gunaratne, who made 58 off 66 balls with five fours, put them in a good position of 107 for two.
Once Afy Fletcher bowled Samarawickrama, Sri Lanka slipped to 166 for five in the 36th over to lose their grip on the match.
The West Indies would have been delighted to grab their last five wickets for the addition of only 36 runs, with Ramharack (3-26) Fletcher (2-40) and Matthews (2-44) being the main destroyers.
However, that total proved to be enough.
