Jamaican man answers to drug trafficking charges in Florida
A Jamaican man reportedly appeared in a Florida federal court Monday to answer to charges stemming from the seizure of millions of US dollars worth of cocaine by the United States Coast Guard.
He has been identified as 33-year-old Rudalph Hylton. Hlyton and another Jamaican, Aldon Delano Brown, were reportedly busted with the illicit drugs after the Coast Guard searched a boat they were travelling on at sea.
According to a report by WPLG Local 10 News, the crew of US Coast Guard Cutter Richard Etheridge conducted a routine boarding of the Sea Ray vessel, named “Lady B”, in the Atlantic Ocean, about eight nautical miles northeast of Haulover Inlet, Florida. Hylton and Brown were reportedly seen aboard the boat.
Following inspection by the crew, 68 bricks of cocaine, totalling more than 70 kilograms, and 14 bricks of marijuana, totalling about 12 kilograms, were reportedly found in a hidden compartment under the floor inside the vessel’s cabin.
Reports are that Hylton told investigators that he had taken the boat from Fort Lauderdale a month prior, and while in Jamaica, he was offered US$100,000 to take the vessel back to Fort Lauderdale, despite having knowledge that the illegal narcotics were hidden on the vessel.
According to WPLG Local 10 News, Hylton was taken into custody on three federal drug trafficking charges and booked into the Broward County jail on behalf of the US Marshals Service, while Brown was reportedly not listed in Broward or federal jail records as of Tuesday morning.
Hylton reportedly remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in front of a federal judge for a pre-trial detention hearing next Monday.
