Impressive address
Dear Editor,
I write to express strong support for the recent address delivered by Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness at the Regular Meeting of the Conference of Caricom Heads of Government. In an era marked by geopolitical uncertainty and socio-economic stress across the West Indies, Holness offered more than customary rhetoric — he presented a coherent, intellectually grounded strategy for regional renewal.
Prime Minister Holness has served Jamaica for nearly a decade, earning the respect of both domestic and international interlocutors for his pragmatic leadership. His newly conferred doctorate in law and policy further distinguishes him as a thinker-practitioner capable of navigating the complex matrix of global power dynamics while centring the interests of Caribbean people. Unlike predictable ideological posturing, Holness’s address was rooted in contextual analysis — not slogans, but strategic prescriptions tailored to the moment.
His critique of idealised narratives that inhibit collective strength was particularly refreshing. Too often Caribbean leaders revert to reflexive oppositional stances that hamper constructive engagement with key partners. Holness instead urged a disciplined assessment of geopolitical conditions, advocating for meaningful participation at critical tables where decisions affecting our region are made.
This thoughtful approach is precisely what our youth need — leadership that values what works, that prizes practical solutions over hackneyed rhetoric, and that seeks unity through results rather than nostalgia. Regions do not advance by re-enacting past frames of reference; they progress by articulating and implementing forward-looking frameworks.
Prime Minister Holness’s address was impressive. It should be widely read, deeply assessed, and vigorously debated. It marks a significant contribution to Caribbean political thought and offers a pragmatic blueprint for collective resilience.
