Fire believed to be the work of arsonist burning at Riverton dump
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has confirmed reports reaching Observer Online that the Riverton dump in Kingston is on fire.
In a media release, the NSWMA said two fires were detected shortly after 11:00 pm Thursday at two sections of the disposal site.
According to the NSWMA, upon discovery, the Jamaica Fire Brigade was promptly notified and dispatched units to the scene within minutes to assist in firefighting operations.
“Coordinated efforts between on-site personnel and the fire brigade began without delay, with priority given to containing the fire to prevent further spread. At this time, the team is actively spreading cover material to suppress the blaze and minimise smoke and environmental impact,” said the NSWMA in the media release.
“Based on preliminary observations, including the manner in which the fire started and the speed at which it spread, there is reason to believe that it may have been deliberately set. However, the authority awaits the outcome of a full investigation before making any definitive conclusions,” added the NSWMA.
The agency said containment efforts are ongoing, and there are enough cover material, trucks, heavy-duty equipment and capable personnel on site.
“Further updates will be made available to the public in a timely manner,” the NSWMA promised.
