Results from Jamaica’s offshore oil survey to become available within next three months — Vaz
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Energy Minister Daryl Vaz says results from the surface geochemical survey conducted by United Oil and Gas offshore Jamaica are expected within the next two to three months.
Vaz made the revelation while speaking during a post-Cabinet press briefing on Wednesday.
“During this mission, 1,189 line kilometres of multibeam echosounder data were collected to map the seafloor. Heat flow probe data was gathered to analyse temperature gradients. Most importantly, piston cores were taken from 42 locations across the Walton and Morant basins for direct testing of oil and gas presence. These cores have now been offloaded and are en route to a laboratory in the United States for detailed analysis,” Vaz said.
Vaz said the survey, which was completed on February 28, lasted for 34 days with no reported safety incidents, no environmental accidents and no conflicts with fisherfolk.
He emphasised that the survey is not simply a technical exercise but a meaningful step forward in understanding the geological potential of offshore Jamaica.
“The data collected is state-of-the-art and will inform evidence-based decision-making about the country’s energy future,” he added.
The energy minister said as the country awaits the laboratory results, the Government remains committed to a responsible, science-led approach.
“Exploration does not mean exploitation without safeguards. It means gathering facts, analysing data and making informed decisions in the best interest of Jamaica,” Vaz said.
