Jamaican Gov’t mulls installation of solar system at its embassy in Havana
KINGSTON, Jamaica—The Jamaican Government is looking to have solar panels installed at the Jamaican Embassy in Havana, Cuba, in the shortest possible time to ease the plight of members of staff who are operating in challenging conditions due to ongoing large-scale blackouts in Cuba.
Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith spoke to the issue during Wednesday’s post-Cabinet media briefing at Jamaica House.
“We’re seeking to install a solar system at our embassy because the embassy itself is severely challenged. The staff there, I really have to express [the Government’s] appreciation to them publicly because they are standing up under the strain,” said Johnson Smith.
“We’re hopeful that we will be able to operate more predictably in terms of our hours when we are able to install the solar system,” she added.
Cuba has been operating under crippling United States sanctions for over 60 years. The plight of Cubans has been made much worse since oil supplies from Venezuela to Cuba dried up with the imposition of a blockade by US President Donald Trump in January. Mexico has also stopped supplying oil to Cuba in the face of threats from Trump.
