Douglas, Reid crowned 100m Under-20 champions at Carifta Trials
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Shanoya Douglas and Riquelme Reid stole the show on day one of the Jamaican Carifta Games Trials with scintillating displays to be crowned 100m champions at the National Stadium on Friday.
Douglas, who as a 16-year-old won bronze in the World Under-20, 200m in 2024, lowered her personal best from 11.28 to a spectacular 11.06 (+1.5 m/s) and was well clear of the chasing pack, led by Natrece East of Wolmer’s, who was second in 11.53. Renecia Edwards of Edwin Allen, in 11.58, was third, while Adora Campbell of St Jago was fourth in 11.70.
Jada Lloyd of the University of North Carolina false-started. She had entered the final with the third fastest time of 11.98 s.
Douglas, who made the switch from Mushette High to Holland High and is weeks away from the prestigious Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, looked poised to break the 11-second barrier. In fact, her time is below the record established by Sabrina Dockery of 11.08 last year.
A few moments later, Excelsior’s Reid, who is having a breakout season, stopped the clock at 10.16 and held off the late charge from Sanjay Seymour of William Knibb and Nyron Wade of Kingston College. Both were pulled to their personal bests of 10.20 and 10.22. Khamani Gordon of Calabar was fourth in 10.40, and Tyreece Foreman of St George’s College was fifth with 10.41.
Reid’s time, in fact, the top three times would have won at Champs last year, which was 10.28 by Gary Card of Wolmer’s Boys’, although he was cramping up, which hampered him significantly.
Not to be outdone, Jamaica College’s (JC) Kai Kelly continues to show remarkable improvement, winning the Under-17 in 10.44. Only last season he broke the Class Three 100m record, lowering it to 10.60, and now, in his first year of Class Two, he will take some beating.
The Calabar pair of Joshua Ricketts and Javane Clayton were second and third in 10.49 and 10.51, respectively.
In the Under-17 girls, Ferncourt High’s Rihanna Scott won in 11.68 just ahead of Azarie Harris of Convent of Mercy Alpha in 11.69. Danelia Clarke of Edwin Allen was third in 11.86.
The three-day Carifta Games Trials continues on Saturday.
