Douglas, Reid sizzle

Big performances in sprints on Carifta Trials Day 1

Shanoya Douglas of Holland High School won the Girls’ Under-20 100m title at the Carifta Games Trials at the National Stadium on Friday, stopping the clock at 11.06 seconds (+1.5 m/s). Riquelme Reid of Excelsior High School won the boys’ race in 10.16 (+1.3 m/s).

Douglas, the World Under-20 200m bronze medallist, lowered her personal best to 11.06, the fastest time in the world this year among both seniors and juniors. Natrece East of Wolmer’s Girls’ School was second in 11.53, ahead of Renecia Edwards of Edwin Allen High School in 11.58. Adora Campbell of St Jago High School was fourth in 11.70.

Jada Lloyd of the University of North Carolina false-started after entering the final with the third-fastest time of 11.98.

Reid left the blocks quickly and held off the late challenge of Sanjay Seymore, winning in a personal best of 10.16. The time is the second fastest this year in the Under-20 behind Australia’s Gout Gout (10.00) and ninth fastest among seniors.

Seymore of William Knibb Memorial High School closed for second in a personal best 10.20, just ahead of Kingston College’s (KC) Nyron Wade in 10.22, also a personal best. Khamani Gordon of Calabar High School was fourth in 10.40 and Tyreece Foreman of St George’s College was fifth in 10.41.

With the late withdrawal of favourite Gary Card of MVP Track Club and an apparent injury to Carifta Games champion Jamal Stephenson, who failed to finish his heats, the race was open. Reid had run a wind-aided 20.45 seconds in the 200m a few weeks ago.

Rihanna Scott of Ferncourt High School won the Under-17 100m in 11.68 (0.3 m/s), holding off Azaria Harris of Convent of Mercy (Alpha) Academy in 11.69. Danelia Clarke of Edwin Allen was third in 11.86 ahead of Trecia-Ann Grant of St Jago in 11.93.

Jamaica College’s (JC) Kai Kelly ran 10.44 (+2.3 m/s) to win the Boys’ 100m after a slow start ahead of the Calabar pair of Joshua Ricketts and Javaney Clayton in 10.49 and 10.52. Tyler Morgan of JC was fourth in 10.65. Jevaney Findlay of St Jago false-started.

Earlier, Shameika McLean of Foga Road High School entered the Girls’ Under-17 400m final with the fastest time of 55.40 ahead of Daniellia Dixon of William Knibb Memorial, who won her heat in 55.89. Tresha-Lee Sutherland of Clarendon College won her heat in 57.53 and was the third fastest.

Annastacia Hall of Holmwood Technical High School was fastest in the Girls’ Under-20 400m in 54.72. Breana Brown of Excelsior won Heat One in 54.80 while Davine Dickenson of Immaculate Conception High School won Heat Four in 55.23.

The Boys’ Under-17 400m saw Jason Pitter of KC run 48.45, the fastest time into the final, while Diwayne Sharpe of Calabar won his heat in 48.68. Rajeev Allison of Calabar was the third fastest after winning Heat One in 49.92.

Zachary Wallace, running unattached, clocked 46.74 in the Boys’ Under-20 400m, the fastest time into the final ahead of Paul Henry of Foga Road in 46.86. Jabari Matheson of William Knibb also won Heat Four in 47.03.

Former Calabar athlete Junior Gallimore of Hydel High School clocked 47.24 while KC will have three runners in the final as Jabulani McLeod (47.42), Jordan Rehedul (47.60) and Markel Smith (47.81) all advanced.

Joshua Parchment of Campion College won the Boys’ Under-17 high jump with 1.90m, the same height as second-placed Shamar Shaw of Calabar. Daquan Dawkins of KC was third with 1.85m.

Stefvanco Henry of Campion won the Girls’ Under-17 high jump with 1.70m ahead of Kemoya Campbell of Edwin Allen, also with 1.70m.

Zavien Bernard of Hydel won the Girls’ Under-20 long jump with 5.92m. Rajana Price of Alpha was second with 5.65m.

Oshea Cummings of Hydel won the Girls’ Under-17 1500m in 4:38.26, ahead of Abigail Clue of Long Island Lutheran High School in 4:50.20. Romeann Gray of Edwin Allen was third in 4:52.61.

Jevaughn Tomlin of Bellefield High School won the Boys’ Under-17 1500m in 4:09.21 minutes, just ahead of Dejaun Gray of St Elizabeth Technical High School, who led with 50 metres remaining but finished second in 4:09.32. Bevin Davey of JC was third in 4:10.42.

Joel Morgan of Edwin Allen advanced to the Boys’ Under-20 1,500m final with the fastest time of 4:00.98. Shemar Gren of JC had the second-fastest time of 4:01.76. Carlos Brison-Cainez of JC won Heat One in 4:07.45.
