Serial rapist gets 15 years: Teen boy among victims
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Matthew Smith, who police here have described as a serial rapist, is to spend just over 15 years in prison for sexual assault of five people, including a teenage boy, in 2023.
The sentence was handed down by Justice Grace Henry McKenzie on Friday, February 27 in the Manchester Circuit Court.
Smith, 28, was sentenced to 15 years and three months on each of two counts of rape, 15 years and three months for possession of a prohibited weapon, seven years and a month on each of three counts of burglary, seven years and a month on each of three counts of robbery with aggravation. The sentences are to run concurrently.
Smith had pleaded guilty in 2025 in relation to the offences committed against five complainants — four women, two of whom were raped — and the boy.
Police said between April and May 2023 Smith burglarised homes in Hopeton and the Balvenie area of Manchester. In three incidents he sexually assaulted the five people.
In one incident, a mother and her teenage son were sexually assaulted at gunpoint. In a second incident Smith and another suspect sexually assaulted a mother and daughter at knifepoint and in a third incident another woman was sexually assaulted.
During one of the incidents Smith stole two tablet devices. Police tracked one of the devices and arrested him with the tablets in his possession.
He was subsequently charged for the offences and placed before the courts.
