Shaquane Gordon and Asharria Ulett among five Jamaican winners on Juco Day 2
Former ISSA Champs medalists Shaquane Gordon of Odessa College and Asharria Ulett of Barton County College were among five Jamaican individual winners on Saturday’s second and final day of the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) Indoor championships in Topeka, Kansas.
Gordon and Ulett won the men’s and women’s 60m hurdles titles respectively while Mickayla Gardner of Central Arizona College won the women’s 200m, Jayval Wright of Hinds Community College took the men’s 200m and Keandro Gordon of Barton County won the men’s 600m event.
Gordon, the Champs and Carifta Games gold medalist ran 7.69 seconds to win the men’s 60m hurdles, leading a clean sweep of Jamaicans on the podium. Matthew Sullivan of Hinds Community College was second with 7.82 seconds while Shevon Depass of Western Texas College was third with 7.83 seconds.
Ulett won the women’s 60m hurdles in 8.25 seconds, ahead of her teammate Camoy Binger, who clocked 8.40 seconds for second. Rashema Lindo of South Plains College took fourth in 8.64 seconds and Santae Wilson of Odessa College was fifth in 8.65 seconds.
Gardner ran a personal best 23.44 seconds to win the women’s 200m while Alliah Baker of Western Texas was fifth in 24.24 seconds. Gardner was also fourth in the women’s 60m in 7.32 seconds.
Wright ran a personal best 20.62 seconds, a NJCAA record, while his teammate Raheem Pinnock was fourth with 20.82 seconds.
Wright earlier finished second in the men’s 60m, the same time as the winner David Nyamufarira of New Mexico Junior College, while Pinnock was fourth in 6.66 seconds.
Gordon of Barton County took the men’s 600m in a Facility Record 1:16.91, beating the 1:17.69 set in 2023 by Hossam Hatib of South Plains.
Chavez Penn of Barton County, who won the men’s high jump on Friday’s opening day, was second in the triple jump with 15.96m.
Deijanae Bruce of Odessa College was second in the women’s high jump with 1.72m, the same height cleared by Kahdijah Bailey of Iowa Western while Jahmeka Brown of Barton County was fifth with 1.66m.
Celine Riddle of Barton County was third in the women’s triple jump with 12.25m with Bruce fourth with 12.23m.
Cindy Rose of Indian Hills Community College was third in the women’s 800m, running 2:12.54 with Euvia Bennett of Cowley College fourth in 2:13.98.
Kaydeen Johnson of Odessa College was also third in the women’s 1000m in 2:52.85, and Nastassia Burrell of Cloud County placed third in the women’s weight throw with 17.37m.
