Salmon, Wallace shine on Carifta Trials Day 2

JOSEPH Salmon of Jamaica College (JC) threw 63.44m to win the nder-20 discus event while Zachary Wallace clocked 45.77 seconds to highlight the second day of the Jamaica Carifta Games Trials at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Wallace, running unattached, found extra speed in the final stretch and surged to a personal best of 45.77 in the Under-20 400m. He pulled both Junior Gallimore of Hydel High School and Jabari Matheson of William Knibb Memorial High School to personal bests of 45.87 and 45.90, respectively.

Paul Henry of Foga Road High School booked his relay spot, finishing fourth in 46.23 ahead of the Kingston College (KC) pair of Jabulani McLeod and Jordan Rehedul in 47.03 and 47.65’ respectively.

Davine Dickenson of Immaculate Conception High School produced a late burst to win the Girls’ Under-20 400m in 53.57. Annastacia Hall of Holmwood Technical High School was second in 53.61 while Breanna Brown of Excelsior High School was third in 53.99.

In the Boys’ Under-17 400m, Diwayne Sharpe of Calabar High School beat Jason Pitter of KC, winning in 47.23. Pitter, who led coming off the final turn, was second in 47.75. Nicholas Jones of Lacovia High School was third in 48.72 while KC’s Roshane Howard was fourth in 49.16 to secure a relay spot.

Shameika McLean of Foga Road won the Girls’ Under-17 400m in 53.39, ahead of Daniellia Dixon of William Knibb in 54.70. Chantellee Brown of Clarendon College was third in 56.47 while her teammate Treshia-Lee Sutherland was fourth in 56.54.

Salmon of JC won the under-20 discus with 63.44m, ahead of Kamari Kennedy of Calabar with 55.37m. Javontae Smith of Munro College was third with 52.53m.

Salmon won Carifta gold in 2025 with a throw of 56.82m and is aiming to defend his title. He has already thrown 66.32m this season and will challenge the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships record of 66.88m.

Able Mills of the University of Minnesota won the Girls’ Under-20 discus with 49.86m. Marla-Kay Lampart of Clarendon College was second with 47.49m.

In the 800m preliminaries, Kamoya Graham of Sydney Pagon STEM Academy recorded the fastest time in the Girls’ Under-17 with 2:17.96 minutes. Aneka Lowe of Edwin Allen High School was second fastest in 2:18.04 while Felicia Compass of Holmwood Technical clocked 2:18.43.

In the Under-20 section, Rihanna Morgan of Hydel was fastest into the final with 2:11.43. Kevongaye Fowler of Edwin Allen ran 2:12.35, and her teammate Sushana Johnson clocked 2:13.67.

In the Boys’ Under-17, Markland Williams of Denbigh High School led the qualifiers with 1:59.09, ahead of Luke Plummer of Sydney Pagon with 1:59.59. Khieme Campbell of St Jago High School won his heat in 2:01.61.

Joel Morgan of Edwin Allen was fastest in the Boys’ Under-20 with 1:52.39 while Thywaine Sterling of William Knibb was second fastest in 1:52.59. Rasheed Pryce of JC had the third-best time of 1:53.25.

Defending Carifta Games 400m hurdles champion Robert Miller of Hydel advanced to the final in 51.92. Rojay Black of JC won his heat in 53.11 while KC’s Jahvanie Tyrell clocked 53.42.

Kavion Minott of Hydel led the Boys’ Under-17 400m hurdles qualifiers with 52.92 ahead of Brandon Bennett of KC with 53.23. Oneil Lawrence of JC was third fastest with 53.33.

In the Girls’ 400m hurdles open, Nastassia Fletcher of Hydel was fastest in 59.72 — the only athlete under one minute. Maria Crossfield of Edwin Allen was next with 1:00.82.

In the field events, Dajounae Rudolph of Holmwood Technical won the Girls’ Under-17 discus with 44.73m. ZoeyAnn Plummer of Excelsior was second with 41.65m.

Dashanelle Clarke of Edwin Allen won the Under-17 long jump with 5.67m, ahead of Jowana Pennant of St Andrew High School for Girls with 5.48m. Stefvanco Henry of Campion College was third with 5.29m.

Zavien Bernard of Hydel won the Under-20 high jump with 1.70m, ahead of Gabriella Treasure of St Catherine High School with 1.60m. Akaylea Brown of Edwin Allen was third with the same height.

In the 200m preliminaries, Shanoya Douglas of Holland High School advanced fastest in the Girls’ Under-20 with 24.19. Natrece East of Wolmer’s Girls’ School was second fastest in 24.88 while Jada Lloyd of the University of North Carolina clocked 24.85.

Danelia Clarke of Edwin Allen was fastest in the Girls’ Under-17 with 24.62, ahead of Azaria Harris of Convent of Mercy Academy ‘Alpha’ with 24.74. Tresha-Lee Sutherland of Clarendon College was third fastest with 24.98.

In the Boys’ Under-17, Tyler Morgan of JC led the qualifiers with 22.17. Rajaun Romelly of St Jago was second with 22.35 and Mario Ross was third with 22.47. KC’s Emmile Higgins of The Bahamas clocked 22.09 but is not eligible for the final.

KC’s Kyle Bodden was fastest in the Boys’ Under-20 with 21.39. Sanjay Seymore of William Knibb ran 21.67, ahead of Johan-Ramaldo Smythe of Holland High with 21.80. Gallimore of Hydel also won his heat in 21.59.

KC’s Michael Neil cleared 2.05m to win the Under-20 high jump, ahead of Kabiki Thomas of Wolmer’s Boys’ School who also cleared 2.05m.

Talshawn Edwards of Calabar won the Under-17 long jump with 7.20m, ahead of Leonardo Green of St Jago with 6.93m.
