Dog bite row heads to trial after failed mediation
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Dog bite allegations took centre stage in the St James Parish Court last Wednesday as a woman claimed that she was attacked while walking past an unfenced yard in the Mount Carey district.
The court heard that on December 31, 2025, approximately 6:50 pm, the complainant was leaving her home to travel into Montego Bay when she passed the yard belonging to the accused, Narry Jarrett.
According to the allegations, four dogs suddenly ran toward her, with two of the animals emerging from Jarrett’s property.
The complainant reportedly shouted at the dogs, causing three of them to retreat. However, one dog allegedly charged forward and bit her on the left ankle before running back into Jarrett’s yard.
The court was told that the accused was on his verandah calling the dog.
The matter was reported to the police, and under caution Jarrett reportedly stated, “Mi sit down on mi verandah and see the dog dem run dung pon har and bite her”.
Following the presentation of the allegations defence attorney Martyn Thomas responded: “We deny ownership of the dogs; perhaps the matter could be referred to mediation.”
The court facilitated a mediation session between the parties, but no agreement was reached.
As a result, Judge Fairclough-Hylton ordered that the matter proceed to trial and scheduled the hearing for April 21, 2026 while extending Jarrett’s bail pending the trial date.
