ECJ writes to three mayors regarding by-elections
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) says it has written to the Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby, Mayor of Morant Bay Louis Chin and Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar Danree Delancy reminding them of their responsibility to fill vacancies for councillors within the stipulated time-period.
According to the ECJ in a media release on Monday, in the letters to the mayors, it also signalled its readiness to conduct the by-elections to fill the vacancies once the mayors so indicate.
The commission reminded the mayors that under the law, a by-election is to be held within approximately three months of the vacancy in an electoral division being recorded.
The ECJ noted that it awaits the decision of the local authorities.
