Frazsiers Whip coach satisfied with victorious start to title defence

Federal clip Real MoBay as six players see red post-final whistle

COURTNEY Dowdie, head coach of three-time Jamaica Women’s Premier League defending champions Frazsiers Whip, says he was pleased with some of what he saw in their season-opening win over Los Perfectos at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Saturday.

Powered by a double from newcomer Shanel Spence and a strike from Christina Salmon, Frazsiers Whip beat Los Perfectos 3-0 in what was a repeat of a semi-final match last season.

Frazsiers Whip lead Zone B on goal difference over Springers United and Federal United, both of whom won their opening games for the first time in their history.

Dowdie told the Jamaica Observer that despite not having sufficient preseason games and “playing with an almost brand-new eleven”, he saw “some positives”.

He said while some of his regular starters were in a national under-17 training camp, the combination of Salmon and Spence was among the positives.

“They combined very well, even though they would not have played together before,” he pointed out.

He said the team “was not as fluent” as he wants them to be.

“We have to work on the overall style of play as we know there is a lot more to come as the season goes on,” Dowdie added.

Springers United edged Mile Gully FC 1-0 at Irwin High, with Ashalee Ellis scoring in the 89th minute.

Elsewhere, Federal United had a similar result over Real MoBay AFC at Jarrett Park, with each team picking up three red cards after the game ended.

In the minutes following the final whistle, members of both teams had to be separated after a fight broke out.

Shakelia Wellington, Chanta Adams and Jazena Campbell of Real MoBay, and Dana-Jean Patterson, Diandra Masters and Ruth Peart of Federal United were subsequently red-carded.

Arnett Gardens, a semi-finalist from last season, scored the largest margin of victory when they handed returning Real Mona a 5-1 defeat in the second game of the double-header at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Tuanashae Hamilton gave Arnett Gardens the lead in the fourth minute while Sade Berry scored the second in the 19th. Shikira Douglas found the back of the net in the 40th minute as Arnett led 3-0 at half-time.

Shaquilla Forbes made it 4-0 in the 82nd minute with a vicious drive from about 20 yards.

Kharisma McLaren pulled a goal back for Real Mona with a brilliant free kick from about 25 yards, the ball dipping under the Arnett Gardens crossbar.

Douglas then competed her brace in time added when she dribbled around the advancing goalkeeper and fired into an open goal.

Nadine Gordon scored a brace for WiFi United, who beat Proven Girls 2-0, while last season’s finalists Cavalier FC earned a 1-1 result against UWI Women at The UWI Bowl.

Chris-Ann Chambers gave UWI Women the lead in the 20th minute before Tatyana Polack drew Cavalier level in the 74th.

SATURDAY’S RESULTS

•Proven Girls 0, WiFi 2

•Los Perfectos 0, Frazsiers Whip 3

•UWI Women 1, Cavalier 1

•Springers 1, Mile Gully 0

•Real MoBay 0, Federal 1

•Arnett Gardens 5, Real Mona 1
