Popular publicist, author Susan Smith laid to rest
Well-known publicist and author Susan Smith was laid to rest on Sunday following a service at the Campbell’s Castle Seventh Day Adventist Church in Windsor Forest, Manchester.
Smith, the founder of Powerhouse Global Media, died on January 21 at 37-years-old.
During her obituary, done by her step-mother Janet Smith, she was remembered as a kind, compassionate, community builder who had a keen interest in her career.
“Susan used her voice to advance causes that were close to her heart, and not too long after graduating from UWI (the University of the West Indies, Mona), she initially went on to teach. However, she had a burning desire to work in public relations, and she started working as a public relations manager in 2012 where she assisted clients both established and upcoming in the entertainment industry,” Smith said.
The late publicist also worked in television production at Hype TV before going on to launch her own company.
Smith was the mother of a five year old girl named Kayra-Rose. Her first book, published in 2022 and titled Little Black Girl, was inspired by and dedicated to her.
“She patiently taught Kaya how to read, how to count and how to learn the days (of the week) and months of the year. She encouraged her to explore her mind and her curiosity… Susan made learning an adventure, and she made Kayra feel smart, capable and confident. That is a gift that will stay with Kayra for the rest of her life,” her stepmother continued.
Also in attendance was long-time friend and client, dancehall artiste Mr Lexx, who remembered Smith, with whom he celebrated many career milestones, for her selfless and caring traits. Though he was overcome by disbelief, he noted that Smith will always be unforgettable.
Teachers, students and the principal of Campbell’s Castle Primary and Early Childhood were also in attendance and gave a heartfelt tribute. Smith donated multiple grants, gifts and even held several Christmas and back-to-school treats at her alma mater to make the children feel valued and loved. Staff members, including the principal, were also presented with plaques for their service to the school by Smith.
Some of Smith’s popular clients also included D’Angel, Pablo YG, Tevin YGF, Quada, Razor B, Jamal, and Deno Crazy. She worked on projects for Jamal and Deno Crazy up until the time of her death.
