Preserve the Cuba-Jamaica medical agreement
Dear Editor,
The recent termination of the over-five-decades-old Cuba-Jamaica medical agreement has sparked concern among Jamaicans, particularly those who’ve benefited from Cuban medical expertise. As a beneficiary of this partnership I’d like to share my experience.
In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I was diagnosed with COVID pneumonia at Cornwall Regional Hospital. Amidst challenges like overcrowding, the care from Cuban medical professionals was exceptional. I owe my life to their dedication, having witnessed 38 others pass away around me.
The Cuban Government has been a valued partner, providing medical care, building schools in the 1970s, and offering nutrition support in schools. Their contribution to Jamaica’s health care is undeniable, and while we recognise the pressure from the United States on Jamaica to alter relations with Cuba, we urge the Jamaican Government to prioritise the people’s needs over external pressures. Terminating this agreement will have severe consequences for health care, especially for the most vulnerable.
Now is the time for ordinary Jamaicans, civic leaders, and corporate leaders to insist on the continuation of this vital agreement. The people must make their voices heard: The Cuba-Jamaica medical partnership must continue.
We call on the Government to reconsider this decision and maintain the Cuba-Jamaica medical agreement, ensuring continued access to quality health care for all Jamaicans.
