UCASE calls on ministry to intervene in wage talks with NMIA
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Union of Clerical Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) has sought the intervention of the Ministry of Labour over reported delays in settling outstanding wage and fringe benefits negotiations with the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA).
In a statement on Wednesday, UCASE noted that aircraft fuel handlers, employed to United Management Services Limited (UMS), and carrying out duties at NMIA have become restive over the delays.
UCASE said the workers have been waiting for a new collective labour agreement between the company and union for over a year.
The agreement on wages and fringe benefits has been outstanding since January 1, 2025, UCASE says.
It indicated that the company and the union have had several local-level meetings and whilst the parties have settled certain items of the claim, the matter of wage adjustment is outstanding.
The union noted that the company has offered 5.6 per cent in year one and 5.6 per cent in year two; an offer which has not found the favour of the union negotiators.
The union and the workers are insisting that the company and the joint operators can do better for the workers.
The union is maintaining that the petroleum sector in Jamaica is profitable and the workers engaged to that sector must be better compensated.
