Springers United win back to back for the first time
SPRINGERS United won back-to-back games for the first time after beating Real MoBay AFC 3-0 in their St James derby at Jarrett Park on Saturday.
Under Coach Paul “Tegat” Davis, Springers United joined defending champions Frazsiers Whip and Arnett Gardens FC, who also won their matches yesterday, as teams with perfect records.
Davis told the Jamaica Observer they were taking their time with the team.
“We are just trying to make them believe in themselves, trying to take it one game at a time,” he said. “I think maybe me being here has also given them some motivation as well.”
On coaching females versus males, Davis said the team’s goal remains ambitious.
“We want to go as far as we can go; we are not putting any limits on this team,” he said.
Marvin Peterkin of Real MoBay said the loss of three players suspended after a post-game brawl against Federal United affected them.
“This was a difficult game for us; unfortunately, we’re short a few players who should be back for the next game,” he said. He added that their plan to “move the ball around” did not work as intended, and early goals made the difference.
Keshara Bailey gave Springers United the lead in the 15th minute, Jordan Maxwell added a second in the 25th minute, and Trishelle Thorpe secured the win with a long-range shot just under the crossbar in the 49th minute.
Frazsiers Whip came from a goal down to beat Federal United 2-1 at Prison Oval. Valanique Nicholas scored for Federal United in the 30th minute, and Christian Salmon equalised two minutes later before scoring the winner in the 75th minute.
Arnett Gardens blanked UWI Women’s 3-0 at UWI Bowl, with goals from Sade Berry (14th minute), Suen Gregory (18th), and Anna-Kay Richards (67th).
Cavalier, last season’s runners-up, recorded their first win of the season, coming from behind to beat WiFi United 2-1. Evernique McLeary scored a penalty for WiFi United in the fifth minute, Jynell Graham equalised in the 31st, and Oneillia Perkins scored the winner in the 45th.
Venicia Reid scored twice as Los Perfectos, semi-finalists last season, defeated Mile Gully 3-0 in their Manchester derby at Mile Gully Community Centre. Reid scored in the fifth minute and again three minutes into added time, and Tanesia Vassell scored in the 85th minute.
Real Mona earned their first point with a 1-1 draw against Proven Girls. Alexia Evans scored for Real Mona a minute into added time in the first half, and Amoy McKenzie equalised in the 84th minute.
