Coach Gilbert dissatisfied despite MoBay victory
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Despite outscoring Dunbeholden FC 4-3 under muddy conditions at Jarrett Park in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) on Wednesday, Montego Bay United’s Head Coach Xavier Gilbert said he was displeased with the team’s performance.
Richardo Ramsey scored a brace in the span of 60 seconds in the second half to push Montego Bay to 57 points.
They have eight points more than second-placed Mount Pleasant FA, who have two games in hand.
“We made it hard for ourselves today,” Gilbert said after the game, “and for that I am disappointed. I thought we were indisciplined in a lot of areas and it is something we have to fix going forward.”
He added: “We had total domination in the first half and just managed to score one goal, and we should have put the game away.
“Some players got a little emotional when calls [did] not go their way, [but] you got to be smart and keep your head if you want to be a championship team. We got to learn to keep our cool.”
Byjeon Thomas, the Dunbeholden FC head coach, said his team put in “a spirited performance” but made costly errors.
“I have to give the players some praise, but we gave up some soft goals. [But] we stopped them from playing their game, we attacked them in wide areas and gave them a lot of trouble, ” he added.
Montego Bay controlled the game and despite creating several scoring chances, had to wait until time added near the end of the first half to take the lead when overlapping Malachi Sterling scored in his second-straight game to give them the lead.
Shakeem Powell pulled Dunbeholden level when he scored from the penalty spot in the 59th minute. But Ramsey scored two quick goals, in the 64th and 65th minutes, to give the home team a two-goal cushion.
Dunbeholden hit back with two goals of their own, Powell completing his brace in the 71st minute and substitute Stephen Barnett scoring in the 77th.
Dwight Merrick, however, got the winner for the hosts in the 83rd minute when his shot from outside the area ricocheted off the left upright and into the goal.
