Section of Westmoreland main road collapses amid inclement weather
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — A section of the Belmont main road in Westmoreland has collapsed following unstable weather conditions currently impacting western Jamaica.
The breakaway, which includes a section of a retaining wall, has resulted in single-lane traffic.
The incident occurred early Thursday along the stretch between Luna Sea Inn and Bluefields Bay Villas.
The National Works Agency (NWA) Community Relations Officer for the Western Region, Janel Ricketts told Observer Online that the area has been cordoned off and the NWA is currently in the process of installing signs. Ricketts said the necessary damage assessments are being conducted along the stretch of the roadway.
Ricketts is urging pedestrians and motorists to exercise caution when navigating the area.
“For persons who are observing what is taking place, for example, pedestrians who just may be curious, it is not a good idea to stand to the edge. And just for motorists, generally, to obey the posted warning signs,” urged Ricketts.
A trough interacting with a cold front is bringing unstable weather conditions to mostly western Jamaica. The unstable weather conditions, which started earlier in the week and could possibly cause flash flooding, is expected to intensify Thursday into Friday.
