World Indoors: Jonielle Smith, Brianna Lyston advance in style in women’s 60m
Jamaica’s Jonielle Smith and Brianna Lyston were both impressive in their qualification for the semi-finals of the women’s 60m on Saturday’s second day of the World Athletics Indoor Championships at Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena in Toruń, Poland.
Both Jamaicans won their respective first round heats and will contest the semi-finals in the afternoon session, seeking a place in the final which will end the programme.
Smith looked smooth as she shut down after about 40 metres to win her heat in 7.13 seconds, ahead of Spain’s Jael Bestue- 7.18 seconds and Karolina Manasova of Czechia- 7.19 seconds.
Lyston, the NCAA champion two years ago, ran a season’s best 7.06 seconds, same as St Lucia’s Julien Alfred, to win her heat, beating the American Jacius Sears (7.07 seconds) with Lotta Kemppinen setting a Finnish national record in 7.16 seconds.
