Volunteers restore storm-ravaged Blessed Assurance Children’s Home

BLESSED Assurance Children’s Home in Adelphi, St James, recently received much-needed assistance from a team of volunteers who worked a full day to repair heavy damage inflicted to the property by Hurricane Melissa last October.

Nurses, doctors and staff from University Hospital of the West Indies Tony Thwaites Wing (TTW), together with medics and engineers from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), spent the day helping the home recover from the Category 5 storm. More importantly, they brought comfort and care to children with special needs and disabilities.

Among them was an 18-year-old who was born with severe Down’s syndrome and is unable to speak, dress, or bathe without help; as well as 33-year-old twin brothers who have lived at Blessed Assurance since 1992 when they were both born with cerebral palsy.

Blessed Assurance, which is run by Mustard Seed Communities, cares for children with disabilities under conditions that demand patience, consistency, and love.

During Hurricane Melissa the facility sustained significant damage as flood waters from a nearby river overflowed onto the compound, inundating dormitories and buildings and disrupting the routine that is often the difference between stability and distress for the home’s 33 residents, some as young as three years old.

“The mission meant much more than fixing structures and handing over beds, wheelchairs, and fans. It was about restoring comfort and a sense of safety for a group of children who are too often forgotten,” a news release from the volunteers quotes Judith Price, general manager of the Tony Thwaites Wing and one of the kind hearts behind the intervention.

“This was never meant to be a ‘nice gesture’ before we move on,” Price continued. “It is an impactful and enduring intervention aimed at restoring comfort, dignity, and security for people who do not have the luxury of bouncing back on their own.”

At one end of the compound, teams from TTW, JDF, and the RDF worked together to repair damaged infrastructure and install equipment that improves cooling, accessibility, safety, and functionality. At the other end, TTW medical personnel conducted health and wellness check for the children and staff.

Music, games, activities, and treats further transformed an ordinary Saturday into a day that felt like a family celebration.

The intervention also included donations aimed at addressing everyday needs such as commodes, wheelchairs, beds, tablets, solar streetlamps, ceiling and wall fans, along with recreational items such as a 65-inch television and a music system. In a home where many residents depend on staff for movement, hygiene, and daily routines, the donations transformed everyday life in meaningful and tangible ways.

For the children, many of whom live with varying but profound limitations, the donated gifts of toiletries, shoes, and small personal items — items that other children would probably describe as “nothing special” — created a Christmas-like atmosphere in February. Their joy may not have been expressed in words but the delight was unmistakable in the sparkle of their eyes and the applause from their little hands.

“My heart is full,” said Janneille Morgan, senior manager of operations and business development at TTW. “I never expected to be affected so deeply by this experience. Sometimes I feel that we are the ones who should thank the children for touching us in such an impactful way.”

What made the day even more thrilling for the little ones was the presence of the JDF and RDF soldiers.

The local soldiers had already been stationed in St James, supporting ongoing Hurricane Melissa recovery efforts, while their Rwandan counterparts are in Jamaica as part of the wider international support extended to the country following the storm.

Both teams were eager and enthusiastic to participate.

“We just wanted to help the little ones get back a sense of normalcy in their lives,” said JDF Captain Dr Megan Murray who was part of the joint medical support team.

But normalcy is a complex word in a place like this, because the “normal” of Blessed Assurance does not look like the normal of your typical schoolyard or children’s place of safety. The grounds are quiet, clean, serene, and tranquil — not exactly what one would expect from a place housing 33 children. For the residents, simple things such as a working fan, a comfortable bed, and reliable access to essential supplies can significantly improve their quality of life.

For the RDF soldiers, the experience carried an extra special meaning.

“In Rwanda we have a tradition called Umuganda,” explained Colonel Moses Kayigamba, contingent commander of the RDF team in Jamaica. “On the last Saturday of every month, communities come together to help a neighbour build a home or complete an important project. It is about taking responsibility for one another. Today, working alongside the JDF and our TTW partners to support the children of Blessed Assurance truly felt like home.”

Brother Dalmas Agan, manager of Blessed Assurance, reflected on the impact of the day.

“This support has not only helped to repair our physical space after Hurricane Melissa but has reminded our children and staff that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten. Words cannot express how grateful we are for this blessing,” he said.

One of the most surprising truths about Blessed Assurance is that, despite the challenges faced by its residents, it is not a place defined by sorrow. In many ways it is a joyful place where children laugh, dance, bond, and find comfort in familiar routines. They live dignified lives under the dedicated care of staff who support them daily, often without recognition or sufficient resources.

In the meantime, TTW has pledged to find ways to continue the support.
