Man dies after choking in bun eating contest
MANCHESTER, Jamaica — Police have confirmed reports that a Trelawny farmer choked to death during a bun eating contest in Christiana, Manchester on Saturday.
Police named the man as Kerron Powell, 37, a resident of Litchfield district in Trelawny. Observer Online understands that Powell suffered from an intellectual disability.
News of the man’s death went viral on social media platform X on Sunday afternoon when journalist Rohan Powell posted about the incident.
Police said the incident has been classified as death by misadventure.
The farmer is suspected to have died from asphyxiation during the bun eating contest on Main Street in Christiana.
Police said about midday, Kerron Powell was one of three participants in the contest when he suddenly choked and vomited.
He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
