UCC Foundation launches Sean Thelwell Memorial Scholarship to support future leaders in logistics and operations
THE University of the Commonwealth Caribbean Foundation (UCCF) launched the Sean Thelwell Memorial Scholarship, a new award established to honour the legacy of the late Sean Thelwell, former senior director of logistics and administration.
Held on March 4 at the Worthington Campus, the UCC Foundation unveiled the scholarship in support of students pursuing studies in logistics and supply chain management, logistics and operations management, and production and operations management.
Professor Dennis J Gayle, acting board chairman of UCC and chairman of the UCC Foundation, emphasised that the scholarship reflects the institution’s commitment to transforming lives through education while recognising those who helped build UCC’s capacity to serve students.
“Sean Thelwell exemplified excellent professional service to UCC — steady, solutions-oriented, collegial, and considerate in collaboration with his colleagues. This scholarship ensures his legacy lives on. It will attract students who can help to strengthen Jamaica’s logistics and operations sectors — which are essential to productivity and national competitiveness,” he remarked.
The scholarship established in his honour will provide meaningful support to students pursuing careers in fields that shape the movement of goods, the delivery of services, and the effectiveness of organisations in an increasingly complex global economy.
In the citation presented to the family by Deputy President Professor Bernadetter Warner, Thelwell was remembered as a devoted member of the UCC community whose contributions played a vital role in supporting the university’s daily operations and the systems that sustain campus life.
Jackie Thelwell, sister of Sean Thelwell, welcomed the tribute and the opportunity to see his name associated with student success.
“Sean believed in helping others move forward. As a family, we are grateful that his legacy will continue through students who will benefit from this scholarship and contribute to Jamaica’s development,” she expressed.
The scholarship launch took place during the UCC Foundation’s inaugural scholarship recognition ceremony, which also celebrated student achievement and honoured over 60 scholarship recipients supported through the foundation’s ongoing partnerships and initiatives.
