Men’s 4x400m team claims bronze as Jamaica end World Indoor with 4 medals
JAMAICA ended the 21st staging of the World Athletics Indoor Championships at Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena in Toru, Poland, with four medals, after the men’s 4x400m relay team finished third in the final session on Sunday.
The team of Reheem Hayles, Delano Kennedy, Tyrice Taylor and Kimar Farquharson ran 3:05.99 minutes to finish just ahead of the Netherlands and match Jamaica’s medal haul from last year in Nanjing, China.
Jamaica had won two silver medals on Friday’s first day — from Kishane Thompson in the men’s 60m and Jordan Scott in the men’s triple jump — and a bronze from Raymond Richards in the men’s high jump on Saturday.
On Sunday, outstanding runs from 800m specialists Tyrice Taylor and Kimar Farquharson on the respective third and fourth legs of the men’s 4x400m relay final brought Jamaica into medal contention after a slow start. They pulled ahead of the Netherlands team on the final lap to claim bronze.
Reheem Hayles led off the race and then handed over to Delano Kennedy — a replacement for Demar Francis who anchored the team in the morning’s preliminary.
The United States, who only made it to the final on time after placing third in their first-round heat, broke the championship record with 3:01.52, winning the title for a 12th time. Belgium took silver with 3:03.29.
There were fifth-place finishes for Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds in the women’s 60m hurdles and Nia Robinson in the women’s long jump. Tajay Gayle was seventh in the men’s long jump and Carey McLeod was ninth.
After two smooth races in the early rounds Simmonds appeared to react late to the starting gun and failed to catch a quality field. She hit the third barrier on her way to equalling her personal best of 7.82 seconds, which was set in the semi-finals.
The time beat her previous personal best 7.88 set earlier this year and ties her with Britney Anderson as the fifth-fastest Jamaican in the event.
Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas won her third-straight World Indoor 60m hurdles gold medal, equalling her own world record 7.65 in the process.
Nadine Vasser of the Netherlands took the silver medal with a season’s best 7.73, with Pia Skrzyszowska running a Polish record 7.73 for bronze.
Robinson, who was competing at her first major global championships, finished fifth in the women’s long jump with 6.75m. She gradually improved over her first three attempts and was among the top six to contest the final round.
The 24-year-old Robinson has a personal best of 6.82m set earlier this year, making her the fifth-best Jamaican woman in the event. On Sunday she jumped 6.50m on her opening round and improved to 6.53m in the second, before a big improvement to 6.75m in the third round which momentarily brought her up to fourth place. She, however, fouled her final three attempts.
Gayle, a three-time World Athletics Championships medallist, had a best of 8.12m while McLeod, a bronze medallist two years ago in Glasgow, Scotland, jumped 7.98m.
