MP Williams threatens to sue Councillor Hamilton over ‘defamatory’ comments
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Attorneys representing state minister and Member of Parliament for Kingston Central Donovan Williams have demanded the “publication of a full retraction and apology” by Rae Town Councillor Rosalie Hamilton over alleged defamatory comments she made about Williams on social media.
Richardson Law Chambers, in a cease-and-desist letter to Hamilton, also demanded.the removal of the comments from the platforms they were allegedly disseminated and warned that failure to comply could result in legal proceedings before the Supreme Court of Judicature of Jamaica, including applications for injunctive relief and other remedies.
The letter, dated March 24, 2026, claims that Hamilton disseminated the “false, malicious and highly defamatory statements” via social media platforms including WhatsApp and TikTok.
Attorneys for Williams maintain that the material has been widely circulated, causing reputational damage, public embarrassment and ongoing distress.
According to the letter, the statements are “wholly untrue” and would tend to lower Williams in the estimation of right-thinking members of society, exposing him to ridicule and undermining his integrity and credibility as a public official.
The firm further argues that the conduct demonstrates a reckless disregard for the truth, particularly in circumstances where no reasonable steps appear to have been taken to verify the claims prior to publication. It maintains that the actions are actionable under Jamaica’s Defamation Act 2013.
Williams and Hamilton are both representatives of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party. Hamilton’s Rae Town division is situated within Williams’ constituency of Kingston Central.
There has been no immediate public response from Hamilton.
