OFF AND RUNNING!

Imperious Douglas lays down marker in 100m prelims

Shanoya Douglas of Holland High, the fastest woman in the world so far, put on an impressive display in qualifying for Wednesday’s semi-finals of the Class 1 Girls’ 100m during the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

Douglas, who ran a personal best 11.06 seconds at the Carifta Trial two weeks ago, won her first-round race in 11.85 seconds (0.7m/s) on Tuesday, shutting down her giant-sized engines midway the race.

Hydel High’s Shemonique Hazle was the fastest in the qualification, running a wind-aided 11.44 (2.3m/s), beating Tiana Marshall (11.66) of Wolmer’s Girls’.

Penwood High’s Shakeya Reid impressed with 11.67 (1.4m/s), while Edwin Allen’s Renecia Edwards, who clocked 11.79 (1.6m/s), and Alexxe Henry, who ran 11.94 (-0.4m/s) also made progress.

Western Championships sprint double champion Giana Murray of Mount Alvernia High ran 11.69 (-0.6m/s) to lead the Class 2 qualifying, ahead of the St Jago High pair of Adora Campbell, who timed 11.74 (0.0m/s), and Shannia Campbell, who recorded 11.75 (0/7m/s).

Azaria Harris of Convent of Mercy Academy (Alpha) led the Class 4 qualifying with 11.67 (-0.6m/s), ahead of Ferncourt High’s Rihanna Scott (11.83), and the Edwin Allen High pair of Andriana Pine, who delivered in 11.88 (-0.1m/s), and Danelia Clarke, 11.90 seconds (1.0m/s).

Holmwood Technical runners dominated two of three 400m preliminaries that were contested, with Annastacia Hall and Malya McLennon, leading the qualifiers into the semi-finals of the Girls Classes 2 and 3 events.

Hall won her first round heat in the Class 2, qualifying with 54.56. Her teammate Maddison Campbell also advanced to Wednesday’s semi-finals with 54.88.

Foga Road High’s Shameika McLean ran 54.78, with Immaculate Conception’s Kimberly Wright recording 55.36. They were followed by William Knibb Memorial’s Daniellia Dixon (55.47), Edwin Allen’s Khaklila Lewis-Satchwell (55.54) and Hydel High’s Sashana Johnson (55.93).

McLennon clocked 56.02 to lead the Class 3 semi-finalists and will be joined by her teammate Tianna Blair (57.36).

Sha-Jay Davis of Alpha qualified with 56.64, ahead of the Hydel High pair of Shaneil Henry (56.70) and Tyecia McDonald (56.93), while Knox College’s Tawauna Marston also advanced with 56.88.

Defending champion Kevongaye Fowler of Edwin Allen High is on course to defend her Girls Class 2 1500m title after an easy qualification.

Fowler cruised to a second-placed finish in her heat in 5:07.92 minutes behind Keyah Anderson of Queen’s School who topped the qualification with 5:07.00.

Sydney Pagon STEM Academy’s Alexia Palmer, silver medallist in Class 3 last year, ran 5:08.06, with Immaculate Conception’s Netanya Robinson (5:08.63) and Alphansus Davis’ Tambbrel Williams (5:09.76).

Holmwood Technical’s Ashley Shepherd won the other qualifying heat with 5:15.30, ahead of St Elizabeth Technical’s Shameika Dennis, who was second with 5:17.16, and third-placed Dallia Fairweather of Hydel High (5:18.76).

Edwin Allen High suffered their first setback of the championships after defending champion Aneka Lowe failed to get into the final of the Class 3 1,500m, finishing 13th overall. Her 5:12.11 effort was outside of the top six in each section.

Danoya Scott of Alpha topped the qualifying with 4:55.55 when she won the second heat, ahead of Shannaya Palmer (4:56.73) of St Jago High and Alexjordan Hall (4:59.17) of Clarendon College.

Holmwood Technical’s Felicia Compass won the first heat in 5:00.55, ahead of Manchester High’s Shawntaesha Gooden (5:08.86) and Kayanna Douglas (5:03.54) of Alphansus Davis High.
