Clarendon’s Jamelia Young retains Girls’ Class 2 shot put crown
Clarendon College’s Jamelia Young retained her Girls’ Class 2 shot put title with a mark of 14.71m on Wednesday’s second day of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls ‘Athletics Championships (Champs) at the National Stadium.
Young, who was only eighth after Tuesday’s qualifying round with 12.75m, overtook Holmwood Technical’s Shamanda Wilmot. The Holmwood athlete, who led the qualifying, threw 14.39m for the silver medal.
Young, who won last year with 13.65m, took the lead in the fourth round after Wilmot had set the pace with her best throw in the opening round.
Excelsior High’s Alyssa Forrester won the bronze medal with 14.22m after she threw 13.42m on Tuesday.
Abigail Bennett of Merl Grove High won the Class 1 discus throw with 47.63m, just beating Edwin Allen High’s Dionjah Shaw (47.61m) and Clarendon College’s bronze medal winner Marla-Kay Lampart (47.51m).
Lampart will still be seeking redemption for missing out on a medal in the Class 1 Girls’ shot put last year after she led the qualification with 13.66m on Wednesday.
Lampart, who was a medal favourite, had placed a disappointing fifth at Champs 2025, but rebounded later in the season to break the national junior record with 17.44m at the Carifta Games a few weeks later.
On Wednesday, Lampart, who registered a season’s best 14.52m to win at the Central Championships, needed two throws to get the automatic qualifying mark for the final.
Bethany Thomas of Wolmer’s Girls’ was next with 13.65m, while Edwin Allen High’s Dionjah Shaw qualified for a third final after she threw 13.45m.
Also advancing were Vere Technical’s Gabriel Merchant, Jada Francis of Immaculate Conception, Abigail Bennett of Merl Grove, and Rehanna Biggs of St Jago High.
