KINGSTON, Jamaica — Kingston Central Member of Parliament (MP) Donovan Williams has made good on his threat to file a lawsuit against Rae Town Councillor Rosalie Hamilton over alleged defamatory remarks made by Hamilton about the MP.

In the lawsuit filed on Thursday, Williams is seeking damages as well as an injunction against his fellow representative of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party, and other relief the court deems fit.

The filing follows a cease-and-desist letter sent days earlier by attorneys representing Williams in relation to the recording and publication of voice notes by Hamilton concerning the MP in a WhatsApp group where Williams and others were present.

The voice notes were leaked from the group and have reportedly appeared on various social media platforms.

Court documents obtained by Observer Online described the remarks by Hamilton as baseless and untrue while claiming that Williams has become the subject of public discourse, including calls for his investigation, as a result of the allegations.

The MP added that the statements have caused significant harm to his reputation, affecting his integrity and credibility as a Member of Parliament and minister of state as well as his reputation as an attorney-at-law.

Noting the lack of an apology, what he describes as a personal grievance on the part of Hamilton, the wide-reaching nature of the voice notes, the resulting reputational damage, among other factors, Williams is seeking aggravated damages, general damages, exemplary damages, injunctive relief, interest, costs and attorney’s costs; and any other relief the court deems.

In his affidavit, Williams reiterated his appeal for an injunction from the court to restrain Hamilton and prevent further damage to his reputation.
