KINGSTON, Jamaica — Technical issues that led to a delay in the payment of salaries at the University of Technology (UTech) on Wednesday have been resolved for the most part, says President Dr Kevin Brown, as he expressed disappointment that some members of staff participated in a sit-in despite communication from the university.

In speaking with Observer Online, Brown indicated that the technical issue had been caused by an overloaded payroll system, as the university pays out retroactive salaries to individuals no longer employed at UTech, as well as regular salaries.

Noting that the system was working at almost double the workload, he said the team at UTech had worked hard to get the issue resolved and salaries were, for the most part, now paid.

Stressing that the university had communicated the issue with staff members, he expressed disappointment that some lecturers had chosen to sit out the day, which he says ultimately affected the students.

He noted, however, that not all of the academic staff had participated in the sit-in.

Adding that UTech was in the middle of a technology overhaul, the president indicated a new payroll system would be onboarded later this year, and with that, he expects the issues to be resolved.
