Spectacular Shanoya

History-making sprinter grabs spotlight with sub-11 win in 100m showdown; Edwin Allen take early control

Shanoya Douglas of Holland High School delivered a splendid personal best of 10.98 seconds (0.7m/s) to win the Girls’ Class 1 100m on Wednesday’s second day of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships in front of a packed grandstand at the National Stadium.

After cruising through the previous rounds, the World Athletics Under-20 championships 200m medallist stepped on the gas and none of her rivals could keep up as she dashed to the fourth-fastest time ever by a Jamaican junior.

Only Alana Reid’s Champs and National Junior record 10.92 seconds, Tina Clayton’s 10.95 seconds, and Briana Williams’ 10.97 seconds are ahead of Douglas’s sparkling new lifestime best.

Additionally, as she did for Muschett High two years ago, Douglas delivered Holland High’s first-ever gold medal at Champs.

Edwin Allen High’s Alexxe Henry was second in 11.21 seconds and her teammate Renecia Edwards was third in 11.45m, as the Frankfield-based school racked up valuable points on their title charge and will enter Thursday’s third day of competition in the lead on 61 points after eight finals.

Holmwood are currently in second place on 29 with Clarendon College siting third on 21.

Meanwhile, Wolmers Girls’ Natrece East continued her winning streak, adding the Class 2 title to the ones she won in classes 4 and 3, running a personal best 11.21 seconds (0.9m/s).

Edwin Allen High’s Kerelle Etienne, who was expected to challenge her, was within touching distance up to 70 metres, but abruptly backed off and trailed across the finish line in eighth place.

Mt Alvernia High’s Giana Murray took the silver medal in 11.61 seconds, the same time given to St Jago’s Shannia Campbell.

Edwin Allen’s Danelia Clarke won the Class 3 gold medal in 11.66 seconds (0.9m/s) ahead of Rihanna Scott of Ferncourt High, who ran 11.74 seconds, while Alpha Academy’s Azaria Harris was third in 11.77 seconds.

Excelsior High’s Brianna Gray ran 12.01 seconds (0.1m/s) to win the Class 4 final, which had to be rerun after just four athletes completed the original race as a result of a recall — a race in which she had also finished first.

Monique Bogle of Edwin Allen was second with 12.30 seconds and her teammate Shantwae Green third in 12.40 seconds.

Earlier, Jovi Rose of Holmwood Technical won the Class 1 Girls’ 1500m, running 4:45.15 minutes, beating a quality field and making up for her silver medal in Class 2 a year ago.

Annataseca Blackwood of Sydney Pagon, who broke the Western Champs record, was second in a new personal best 4:45.43 with Rihanna Morgan of Hydel High third with 4:47.55.

Edwin Allen’s Kevongaye Fowler, who was fourth in the Class 2 final a year ago, took the gold medal in 4:41.37 seconds, dedicating the win to her late teammate Tanesha Gayle, who died during training earlier in the season.

Fowler told the Jamaica Observer she had been close to Gayle ever since she started attending Edwin Allen.

“I did this all for [her]”, she said, “We were close, and when she died at training I was there…so this is for her.”

Alikay Reynolds of Alphansus Davis High, last year’s gold medlallist, was second in 4:44.79, and Alexia Palmer of Sydney Pagon was third in 4:45.97.

Clarendon College’s Alexjordan Hall won the Class 3 gold medal in 4:47.35, beating Alpha Academy’s Danoya Scott-4:48.54 with Edwin Allen’s Romeann Gray taking the bronze with 4:48.72.

Hydel High’s Nastassia Fletcher, last year’s Girls’ Class 2 champion, appears on course to win the Class 1 gold medal after she ran 52.92 seconds in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Despite the presence of Edwin Allen’s Kellyann Carr, 53.67, and Holmwood Technical’s Abrina Wright, 53.08 — silver and bronze medalists respectively from last year — Fletcher has established herself as the favourite for the gold.

Foga Road High’s Shameika McLean leads the Class 2 qualifying after running 52.52 to beat last year’s silver medallist Sashana Johnson of Hydel High, who ran 54.12.

Annastacia Hall of Holmwood Technical, 53.29, Daniellia Dixon of William Knibb Memorial, 53.49, Immaculate Conception’s Kimberly Wright, 54.29, and Maddison Campbell of Holmwood Technical are also through.

Edwin Allen failed to qualify any of their two athletes in the Class 3 final, which was led by William Knibb Memorial’s Khortnie Eccleston with a time of 55.41, followed by Hydel High’s Tyecia McDonald, 55.41, and Malya McLennon of Holmwood Technical, 55.64.
