KINGSTON, Jamaica — The historic town of Port Royal took a bold step into the digital future as the Universal Service Fund (USF) officially launched free public Wi-Fi services at the Port Royal Primary School under the inspiring theme “USF Connects Legacy.”

According to a release, the launch, held on Friday, March 27, brought together students, residents, community leaders and stakeholders for a vibrant and memorable occasion filled with excitement, giveaways, and community engagement, highlighting the transformative power of connectivity in one of Jamaica’s most culturally significant communities.

In the past, the town was known as the “richest and wickedest city on earth,” now Port Royal continues to evolve while preserving its rich heritage. Through this initiative, the USF is ensuring that the community is not only rooted in history but also fully equipped to participate in the digital age.

Delivering remarks at the ceremony, USF Chief Executive Officer, Charlton McFarlane, emphasised the importance of bridging the digital divide and creating opportunities for all Jamaicans.

“Under our theme, USF Connects Legacy,’ we are proud to bring free public Wi-Fi to this historic town. While Port Royal is rooted in history, it also deserves to be connected to the future. And this is the intention behind this Wi-Fi, while providing internet access, it will also allow for new opportunities,” said McFarlane.

He added, “For our students, it means access to research, online learning, and digital tools that can help them succeed in school and beyond. No longer should location limit learning. For our vendors, like Roger, it means the ability to promote their business online, accept digital payments, and reach customers far beyond the shoreline. Imagine someone enjoying some delicious seafood here today and tomorrow, that same business is being seen by someone overseas. That is the power of connectivity.”

The launch created a lively atmosphere as students and residents participated in interactive segments as they celebrated the arrival of reliable, free internet access in their community. The new Wi-Fi service boasts 25 access points and can accommodate up to 500 residents at a time, meeting the USF’s broader mission to expand digital access across Jamaica, ensuring that communities, regardless of location, can benefit from modern technology and the opportunities it brings.

At the same time, Member of Parliament for Kingston Eastern and Port Royal, Phillip Paulwell, welcomed the development, noting the importance of connectivity in driving community growth and development.

“This is a massive facility that is being offered to the people of Port Royal, it is the biggest facility in East Kingston. So, it is very significant and I think the Port Royalists ought to understand and appreciate that. I want to see, the USF grow from strength to strength to strength,” MP said.

The USF Connects Legacy initiative reflects the organisation’s continued commitment to strengthening communities through technology, ensuring that Jamaica’s historic towns remain vibrant, resilient, and connected for generations to come.
