Newly minted police constable credits visually impaired dad for milestone
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Constable Raheem Brown, who recently graduated from the National Police College of Jamaica, is crediting his latest milestone to his visually impaired father, Detective Inspector Rohan Brown, head of the Portland Community Safety and Security (CSS) Branch in the Portland Policing Division.
The young constable who graduated on Wednesday, shared that despite his father being visually impaired and the demands of his job, he always made time for him and his sister, pushing them to achieve their goals.
“Despite him being visually impaired and having so much to do as the inspector in charge of the CSS Branch in Portland, he still made time for me and my sister to help us to grow and accomplish great things in ourselves as well,” Brown said.
“This moment is something that I think I will never forget. This is something that I’ve been looking forward to for a very long time, and I am sure that my father is proud, and even though my mother is not here, I am making sure that she is proud as well,” he added.
Meanwhile, his father shared that his son’s achievement means a lot to him and noted that his son has an opportunity to achieve even more than he did in the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
“The moment of truth came when his mother died, and that was when he, I guess, decided that, look, I want to go the way that my father says. It means a lot,” the senior Brown recalled.
“It’s just heartbreaking that his mother is not here to share in this moment because I know she would have been proud of him. She would have been very proud of him. But his sister, his only sister, is here sharing with us,” the detective inspector added. “I am very happy that she was able to come. Now he has the opportunity of surpassing where I have reached in the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), and I am very grateful for that.”
