Tighter security for Champs following breach
ISSA President Keith Wellington has warned that tighter action will follow after a fan breached security and ran onto the track during the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs) on Wednesday.
Wellington described the incident to the Jamaica Observer as one that “should not have happened in the first place”.
The breach came at the end of the Class One Boys’ 1500m final when a spectator left the Grandstand, passed through a gate, and made his way onto the track to celebrate with winner Ryan Achau of St Jago High.
Security and officials were in the area but did not intervene as the situation unfolded.
There was no collision and no injuries but the moment has raised concerns about what could have gone wrong.
On social media many dismissed it as a passionate reaction but there are those who view it much differently, pointing to the danger it posed, especially with athletes crossing the line at speed.
Wellington agrees with the concerns.
“I know that as soon as it happened we did some work in terms of addressing the issue at the security point that he got access,” he said.
Wellington says the response cannot only be about tightening security, but also about personal responsibility.
“It also comes down to being responsible patrons, responsible adults, and I think it was very irresponsible of the individual,” he said.
“There isn’t much you can do to stop someone being irresponsible but what we can do is to make sure there are actions, that there are consequences when someone behaves in that particular way.”
The incident follows a promise made by Assistant Commissioner of Police Terrence Bent ahead of Champs that the event will be policed to international standards, regarding not only traffic and contraband control, but fan safety and cordoning.
