Wall Street Trader to lead home rivals in Gregory Park Sprint
THE second staging of the $1.4-million Gregory Park Sprint Trophy, an Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward, takes centre stage at Caymanas Park tomorrow. A small but talented field of seven runners will compete over five furlongs (1,000m) on the round course.
Below, the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide takes a closer look at the runners and their chances of winning.
1. FLORINDIA (USA): (5 dk b/br m by Gone Astray – Flaring) – Florindia’s impressive win over seven furlongs on February 28 in 1:25.4 has earned her a spot in this event. A cut back in distance should suit her well, and although she’s stepping up in class she’s definitely a horse to watch.
2. CALIFONIA CROWN: (5 ch h by Hedge Fund – Dream Big) – This capable horse has speed and should use it to great effect in this Sprint Trophy. With a strong pedigree, California Crown is a strong contender and could be the dark horse in the field.
3. MONEY MARKET: (6 b h by Successful Native – Soca Dancer) – Money Market is a very fit and consistent runner and should continue to earn his keep in this event. While he might not be the flashiest horse, his reliability could pay off.
4. ZULU WARRIOR: (5 ch h by Soul Warrior – Lookatmenow) – Zulu Warrior has shown glimpses of promise with one win from four starts this season. He’s not expected to win but he could make a brave bid and cause some upset.
5. TEFLON DON: (5 b h by Casual Trick – The Lady Scored) – A previous winner, Teflon Don is looking to repeat his success but he’s not expected to quite hit the mark this time around.
6. SHE’S THAT GIRL: (5 ch m by Sensational Slam – Palace Gold) – Coming off two consecutive wins in the class below, She’s That Girl will need to improve significantly to challenge the top horses in this event.
7. WALL STREET TRADER (USA): (7 dk b/br g by Vancouver – Selva) – Given the edge, Wall Street Trader has the speed, pace, and talent to take out the Gregory Park Sprint Trophy. His third-place finish behind Funcaandun and Supernatural Power over seven furlongs on March 14 shows he’s capable of mixing it with the best.
