Leaders MBU and defending champions Cavalier clash in JPL third round

ST JAMES, Jamaica  — League leaders Montego Bay United and defending champions Cavalier SC are set to clash on Sunday in a crucial third-round Jamaica Premier League encounter, with both sides in need of a victory.

Both teams have had indifferent form of late. Montego Bay United’s advantage at the top has narrowed to just three points, while Cavalier SC are battling to stay in the top six with games in the regular season running out.

Also on Sunday, Portmore United could move into third place with a win over Dunbeholden FC in their Portmore derby. Chapelton Maroons stand to gain if Cavalier SC fail to secure maximum points, while Harbour View will aim to continue their rise up the standings against a struggling Tivoli Gardens side.

In their previous meeting at Jarrett Park, Montego Bay United were able to eke out a 1-0 win, avenging an earlier 3-0 defeat. Another win on Sunday would guarantee they will be leaders after the round.

MBU currently sit on 58 points, three more than second-placed Mt Pleasant FA, who play on Monday and still have two games in hand.

On Wednesday, MBU rallied late to earn a 1-1 draw with Molynes United, shortly after suffering a 3-1 loss to Chapelton Maroons.

Cavalier SC are going into the game on the back of two losses and their place in the play-offs, for now, could be on the line.

Portmore United have strengthened their attack with the addition of former Reggae Boy Corey Burke, who has already made an impact by scoring in his first two appearances.

Dunbeholden FC have won their last two matches but have yet to score against Portmore United in their meetings this season.

Chapelton Maroons are riding momentum from consecutive victories, bringing them within reach of the top six ahead of their clash with Molynes United, who have slipped into the relegation zone. Although three of their last five meetings have ended in draws, Chapelton appear to be the stronger side based on current form.

Harbour View are unbeaten in their last three matches and will face a Tivoli Gardens team without a win in their last four, with both sides eager to collect valuable points for the remainder of the season.

Sunday games:

Tivoli Gardens vs Harbour View — Edward Seaga Complex

Chapelton Maroons vs Molynes United — Turners Oval

Montego Bay United vs Cavalier SC — Jarrett Park

Dunbeholden FC vs Portmore United — Dunbeholden Complex

Monday games:

Racing United vs Treasure Beach — Anthony Spaulding Complex at 5:00 pm

Waterhouse FC vs Spanish Town Police — Drewsland at 6:00 pm

Arnett Gardens FC vs Mt Pleasant FA — Anthony Spaulding Complex at 7:30 pm
