Mr Vegas talks Gallis Code
Dancehall is not known for chivalry, but for Gallis Code, the title of Mr Vegas’s latest drop.
In the track the artiste steps forward to defend fellow artiste D’Angel, one of the genre’s best-known female acts.
It was inspired by a much-publicised spat between her and fellow deejay Khago last year.
According to Mr Vegas, he was incensed when Khago implied that there was more than a professional relationship between himself and D’Angel following the release of Personal, their collaboration, which he produced.
She denied any amorous connection.
“Women must be treated with respect across the board, especially in the workplace. The music industry is our workplace that we have to share or co-exist with the females,” Mr Vegas told the Jamaica Observer. “It must be noted that it is the women who are the backbone of our music. I personally believe that if it was not for Rita Marley and her steadfastness Bob Marley’s legacy would not be what it is today.”
The veteran toaster recorded Gallis Code on the WYFL rhythm, touted by many as the hottest beat doing the dancehall rounds. It was released on March 20.
Having done hit songs on several vaunted rhythms such as the Playground (Hands in The Air/Nike Air) and Old Skool (Do You Know), Mr Vegas says identifying a potentially big dancehall jam is not difficult.
“Shabba [Ranks] once said, ‘Deejay ears lift up when they hear boom rhythm.’ That is how I identify a good rhythm. The sound, the mood, the quality, and most of all, is it identifiable,” he noted.
Produced by DJ Mac, the WYFL has been the buzz in dancehall circles since it hit the market in late 2025. Many high-profile artistes have done songs on it, including Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Cham, and Spice.
