Mt Pleasant, Racing seek to close gap on leaders MBU
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former champions Mt Pleasant FA and Racing United are hoping to close the gap on leaders Montego Bay United when the 32nd round of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) ends on Monday with three games.
Second-placed Mt Pleasant FA will take on ninth-placed Arnett Gardens in the second game of a double- header at the Anthony Spaulding Complex, set to start at 7:30 pm, after third-placed Racing United will be up against Treasure Beach FC in the opening game, starting at 5:00 pm.
Fifth-placed Waterhouse FC will host last-placed Spanish Town Police at Drewsland, set to start at 6:00 pm.
Mt Pleasant FA are on 55 points, six behind MBU with two games in hand and are going after a fourth straight win in the competition and will hope to extend their unbeaten run against Arnett Gardens to eight games.
After their exit from the Concacaf Champions League, the three-time finalists will be able to focus solely on the JPL as they seek a fourth straight final berth and a second title.
Arnett Gardens have slipped to ninth place, on 39 points, winless in their last two outings, and face a Mt Pleasant FA team that has scored 10 goals in their last three games.
Racing United and Treasure Beach have combined to draw their last five games and both will need to win.
Racing United need to create some space ahead of fourth-place Portmore United, who remained two points behind, after losing to Dunbeholden on Sunday.
Treasure Beach have drawn their last three games as they continue to crawl away from the relegation zone, and another point today would see them four points away from the drop zone.
Fifth-placed Waterhouse are on 49 points and are expected to get maximum points from Spanish Town and edge closer to Portmore United.
Waterhouse had won their second round game over Spanish Town Police, squaring their lifetime record at one win apiece after the promoted team had beaten them 2-1 in the first round.
