Sir Don dominates rivals in King’s Plate feature
Three-year-old American-bred bay colt Sir Don delivered a breathtaking display of speed and power to take the 17th $1.25-million King’s Plate at Caymanas Park on Sunday, leaving the competition in the dust.
The Anthony Nunes trainee stormed to a 6 ¼ length victory in a blistering 1:31.2 (23.1 x 46.1 x 1:12.0 x 1:24.4) in the Overnight Allowance contest over seven and a half furlongs (1,500m).
Raddesh Roman guided Sir Don to the lead early, narrowly ahead of American Aviator (Tevin Foster). The two foreigners battled for the lead down the backstretch, but Sir Don pulled away approaching the half-mile (800m) turn and cruised to the finish line.
Rainsville (Tajay Suckoo) and Mark My Identity (Dane Dawkins) rounded out the podium, but it was all about Sir Don as he registered his fourth-career win from six starts on local soil.
Trainer Michael Lowe should not be left out of the celebration party as he saddled three winners on the card. Marlowe’s winners were Slam Sharp, ridden by Foster, in the opening race; Always Wright, with Richie Shakes aboard in the fourth race; and Planner, also ridden by Foster, in the seventh race.
Racing is to continue on Saturday.
