Jamaica franchise for CPL dubbed ‘Jamaica Kingsmen’

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s returning Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise will be officially called the “Jamaica Kingsmen”.

The name was revealed at a press conference on Tuesday at the Jamaica Pegasus in Kingston, marking Jamaica’s return to the regional T20 tournament after a two-year absence.

As first reported by the Jamaica Observer, new ownership group, Kingsmen Sports Enterprise, considered keeping the previous team name, Jamaica Tallawahs.

However, owner Fawad Sarwar says the Kingsmen name was the best choice and was endorsed by the CPL and government.

Sarwar also announced that they will introduce a women’s team, which will compete in a four-team competition this summer.

Sports Minister Olivia “Babsy” Grange and Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett say the Government plans to support the Kingsmen team for the long term.

The men’s tournament is set to begin in August, and the Jamaica Observer understands Sabina Park will host four games.

The last time games were held in Jamaica was in 2019.

Previous owner Kris Persaud sold the franchise back to the CPL, citing financial challenges due to a lack of support from the government.
