2024: An airstrike by Israel on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, kills seven officials, including three senior generals; it is the most serious attack on Iranian targets since 2020.

1976: Helter Skelter, detailing Charles Manson’s cult “family”, their capture, trial, conviction and aftermath, premieres on CBS.
1990: Ultimate Warrior beats Hulk Hogan for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) Heavyweight and Intercontinental titles, before a crowd of 67,678.
1993: Israeli forces thrust deep into Lebanon, blasting Palestinian guerrilla bases near Tripoli with helicopters and gunboats. Some five years later to the day, in 1998, Israel formally accepts a United Nations (UN) resolution calling for its withdrawal from south Lebanon, a policy change that represents a first step toward ending a 20-year occupation.

2016: The Golden State Warriors’ National Basketball Association (NBA) record-winning home run ends at 54 games with a 109-106 defeat to the Boston Celtics; the loss at Oracle Arena is the Warriors’ first since January 2015.
2018: American television producer Steven Bochco — co-creator of Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, and NYPD Blue — dies at 74.
2019: Saudi Arabian oil company Saudi Aramco is revealed to be the world’s most profitable company when its earnings are released US$111.1 billion in the previous year.
2020: The All England Lawn Tennis Club cancels Wimbledon for the first time since World War II because of the COVID-19 pandemic; the entire grass-court season is abandoned.
2022: Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declares a nationwide public emergency after violent protests amid the country’s worst economic crisis since independence.
2025: Legendary movie poster artist Drew Struzan announces he can no longer paint due to Alzheimer’s; Struzan is known for illustrating over 150 movie posters including for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner and Back to the Future.
