Physical Education teacher to represent Jamaica at Mr Friendship International
Orlando Collin, a physical education teacher at the Papine High School in St Andrew, was recently selected as Jamaica’s representative for the Mr Friendship International competition.
The event is set for Thailand in December.
In an interview with Observer Online on Tuesday, Collin shared that he is looking forward to representing his country on the global stage.
“Representing Jamaica overseas is a huge honour, and I’m eager to make the most of it! I’m looking forward to meeting new people, immersing myself in different cultures and sharing our island’s vibes with the world. I’m excited to learn other languages, try new foods and connect with people from all walks of life. Unity and cultural exchange are key, and I’m all about spreading love and positivity through travel and connection. I’m ready to rep Jamaica to the fullest,” said Collin.
According to Collin, the title of Mr Friendship Jamaica is a big deal.
“The title Mr Friendship Jamaica is a huge deal, not something you get every day. It means the world to me, being an ambassador for Jamaica and potentially a global icon. It’s about carrying the island’s flag high, spreading unity and positivity worldwide, and I’m feeling the weight of it, and I’m ready to make Jamaica proud.”
Born in St Thomas, Collin relocated to Kingston where he took up a teaching position at Papine High late last year.
“I educate students on fitness, health, injury prevention, and provide them with comprehensive physical education. This includes aspects of nutrition, various sports disciplines and integrates elements from other subjects. I have been teaching for a few months now, and as of September 2026, it will be approximately one year since I started.
“Although I am relatively new to the profession, I am optimistic and positive about the impact I can make. I derive great satisfaction when students excel and achieve their goals, and I appreciate positive engagement, which enhances their learning experience and prepares them for future endeavours. What I enjoy most is engaging in physical activities with my students, as I believe it helps break down barriers and foster a more inclusive learning environment,” he continued.
“Despite some societal expectations that teachers should maintain a certain level of formality, I make it a point to participate alongside my students, whether it’s running with them or demonstrating exercises. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the surprise and delight on their faces when they realise I’m fully invested in the activities,” Collin added.
The Mr Friendship International stands at the intersection of culture, fashion and human connection. It is a global platform where men step into the spotlight not to perform perfection, but to express identity, perspective and cultural pride — through style, movement, dialogue, and presence.
The competition ideals— representation matters as much as appearance; voice carries as much weight as visuals; and individuality is never separated from community — are critical factors in selecting the winner.
Jamaica’s 2025 representative, Anthony Arroyo Rivera won the Voice of Friendship Award and was the second runner-up overall, the highest placement from the Caribbean at Mr Friendship International.
