Swatch International still going strong after 34 years
After 34 years at the forefront of the sonic rebellion sparked by Jamaican sound systems, Swatch International continues to be a force in the Jamaican dancehall, racking up bookings overseas including Japan and the United States.
“We are getting overseas dates now more regularly. The US tour last year was a huge success, and we already have repeat gigs for 2026 to 2027 with a lot of satisfied promoters. We have a Japan tour coming up, plus we will also be touring Europe later this year,” O’neil Miles, founder of Swatch International, said in a press release.
Over the years, the sound system has cultivated a huge underground cult following for its unique style of customising its dubplates and integrating them to create a euphoric vibe that can rock any party.
The sound has also increased its online presence over the past year, with the Swatch brand often featured on platforms like SoundCloud with its potent mixes. The sound system has developed loyal followings on Instagram and Facebook.
“Swatch International has kept pace with the rapid technological advances, and we have a lively social media engagement with younger fans on all the platforms,” Miles said.
Since Hurricane Melissa, Swatch International has been boosting its philanthropic presence in St Elizabeth. Through a series of partnerships with St Elizabeth-based promoters, the sound system’s management team has donated care packages to the displaced residents.
They have also provided several single-burner gas stoves with 25lb gas cylinders for affected families.
“We are booked in St Elizabeth almost weekly, so we have made a special effort to partner with promoters from areas that were affected badly by the recent hurricane, to assist people with care packages and other forms of necessities. We seek out the most vulnerable people in their communities, then we donate items on the day of the dance,” Miles said.
The representatives of the sound have also donated cases of water, tarpaulins, and other necessities whenever they appear on gigs in St Elizabeth.
Swatch International, the real Passa Passa sound, was established in 1991 by the bright mind of young O’Neil Miles, whose love for music was sparked in his teenage years at Jamaica College.
Swatch International had a meteoric rise and soon became one of the top-ranked sounds coming out of Kingston in the late 90s with legendary names like Maestro and Genius at the controls.
The company now revolves around a team of 20.
The team includes the maintenance crew, technician, and several selectors such as Leighton ‘Jett’ Murray, Nicholas ‘Silent’ Powell, Ricardo ‘Tucker’ Tucker, Dalton ‘Dalton’ Whilie. Other standout members of the team include Oniel “Boy Boy” Trought, Richard “Little Richie” Campbell, Walter “Ice Box” Blackwood and Delroy “Barge” Burnette.
“Right now, we are uniquely placed to dominate for the foreseeable future as we have a vibrant young core of selectors mixed with seasoned veterans,” Miles said.
Despite all that success, Swatch International is not done, the sound system says.
Known for pioneering the popular “Passa Passa”, which drew massive crowds to West Kingston in the early 2000s, Swatch International will be resurrecting the street dance brand with an authentic rowdy event with all the bells and whistles for which the event has carved out a reputation. Dancehall fans have been clamouring for the rebirth of Passa Passa.
“The rebirth of the Original Passa Passa Street Dance Style will be a reality in the near future,” Miles vowed.
The event will be held at its original location at Miles Enterprise Limited, located at 47 Spanish Town Road in downtown Kingston.
One of the biggest indicators was an event called ‘Passa Passa meets Meca’ (Marketplace Entertainment Complex for the Arts) on Constant Spring Road, St Andrew.
“This event was awesome,” an excited Miles said. “It was humbling to know how long we haven’t hosted a Passa Passa event in years and yet, we saw a massive turnout at the club. It was great to hear the warm comments the patrons had during the event. Hats off to the Meca management who came together to make the event possible.”
