Jamaica’s medal tally stands at 27 after Sunday’s first session at Carifta Games
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Jamaica added five more medals- a gold, two silver and two bronze- on Sunday morning’s session at the 53rd Carifta Games, being held at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St George’s, Grenada.
Jamaica increased their medal tally to 27-nine gold, 11 silver and seven bronze- followed by Trinidad and Tobago with 14 medals- four gold, six silver and four bronze, just ahead of the Bahamas with three gold, five silver and six bronze, while Guyana are on five medals with three gold, a silver and a bronze.
Meanwhile, Shanoya Douglas stayed on course to win the Girls Under-20 double after she advanced to the final of the Girls Under- 20 200m in Sunday’s preliminaries as Jamaica has two runners in all four finals.
US-based Able Mills won the Girls Under- 20 shot put with 15.27m, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Peyton Winter who took the silver medal with 14.14m with last year’s gold medalist and record holder Marla Kay Lampart of Jamaica third with 13.81m.
Another defending champion, Michael-Andre Edwards, lost his title when he was second in the Boys’ Under -20 long jump with a best mark of 7.47m (-1.0m/s).
Carlin Archer of the Bahamas won with 7.68m (0.5m/s) with his compatriot Joshua Williams finishing this with 7.16m (0.5m/s).
Kaliah Haye of Cayman Islands retained her Girls’ Under -17 discus throw title with 47.06m followed by two Jamaicans, Dajounae Rudolph who threw 45.13m for the silver and Zoeyann Plummer who took the bronze with 43.83m.
Douglas, who retained her 100m title on Saturday’s first day, ran a wind-aided 23.46 seconds (3.3m/s) to advance to the finals of the 200m along with Natrece East who clocked 23.77 seconds (0/7m/s).
Sanjay Seymore will hope to make amends after he was disqualified in the Boys Under – 20 100m final, running 20.89 seconds (0.5m/s) to qualify for the 200m final.
Elijah Smeikle is also through after he ran 21.00 seconds (0.9m/s),Shayon Smith ran 24.14 seconds (0.2m/s) and Danelia Clarke clocked 24.31 seconds (-0.3m/s) to qualify for the Girls’ Under -17 200m final, while Mario Ross- 21.48 seconds (0.4m/s) and Tyler Morgan with a wind-aided 21.56 seconds (3.3m/s) are through to the Boys’ U17- final.
Robert Miller looks well set to defend his Boys’ Under- 20 400m hurdles title after he qualified with 51.95 seconds along with Jahvanie Tyrell who ran 52.08 seconds.
Nastassia Fletcher- 59.25 seconds and Marria Crossfield- 1:01.02 seconds are also through to the Girls’ Under- 20 400m hurdles final.
