Woman gives birth on flight from Kingston to New York
A Caribbean Airlines flight en route from Jamaica to New York took an unexpected turn when a passenger went into labour and delivered her baby while the aircraft was still mid-air on Saturday.
The incident occurred aboard flight BW005, operated by a Boeing 737 Max 8, according to the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian. What began as a standard international flight quickly became an in-air medical situation, with the cabin crew stepping in to assist with the delivery.
The report said air traffic control immediately cleared the aircraft for a more direct approach into John F Kennedy International Airport, with emergency medical teams positioned to meet the flight on arrival. However, by the time the plane landed in New York, the baby had already been safely delivered.
Audio from air traffic control, initially shared by international media, captured a brief exchange from the cockpit.
“Caribbean five, ground. Is it out yet?” an official asked.
“Yes, sir,” the pilot replied.
“Alright, tell her she’s gotta name it Kennedy,” the official responded.
Both the mother and newborn were reportedly attended to by medical personnel upon arrival in New York.
Caribbean Airlines has since confirmed the incident, noting that, as it was handled as a medical situation, it did not require a formal emergency declaration. The airline also commended its crew for remaining calm and professional, ensuring the safety and comfort of everyone on board.
