Imjustagirl unleashes brilliant speed in debut
Trainer Jason DaCosta hails filly’s potential
Trainer Jason DaCosta is cautiously optimistic about the future of three-year-old American-bred bay filly Imjustagirl, but her stunning debut on Monday, April 6, 2026, has certainly grabbed his attention.
After impressive morning gallops, Imjustagirl was primed to make a statement in her first outing, and she didn’t disappoint. The far-striding filly dismantled her opposition, winning by 7 lengths over 6 furlongs (1,200m) in a brilliant 1:11.3 (21.4 x 45.2 x 58.1).
The race was a Restricted Allowance II for native-bred three-year-olds (non-winners of two) and imported three-year-olds and upward (maidens).
“I am very impressed with the run,” DaCosta said.
“She was working unbelievable in the mornings, working like something I have never seen in Jamaica before and so I have high hopes for her. I just told [Robert] Halledeen that if he didn’t need to ride her, don’t ride her, just save her for the down the road. She did it effortless, very impressive time, basically jogging around, and I couldn’t be happier,” DaCosta told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“She beat a good horse and she did it effortless and so I hoping that she keeps healthy and happy and she should have a good season. It is early days and so we are going to take it step by step, one day at a time,” he added.
Imjustagirl got a good break at the off and quickly assumed the early lead. She led the field into the half-mile (800m) ahead of Army Tank (Dane Dawkins), who recovered from a slow start. Cruising coming into the lane, Halledeen pressed the gas button and Imjustagirl powered home easily ahead of Army Tank and Purosangue (Clive Lynch).
