Major road closures announced across Kingston for Carnival
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Motorists and commuters are being urged to plan ahead this weekend as extensive road closures and traffic diversions take effect across the Corporate Area for Carnival celebrations on Sunday.
The advisory, issued by the police, outlines restrictions beginning at 8:00 am to facilitate three major road marches, Yard Mas and Xodus, and Gen X, which are expected to draw large crowds.
Authorities say several key thoroughfares, including Arthur Wint Drive, Hope Road, Trafalgar Road, Lady Musgrave Road, and Knutsford Boulevard, will be closed at various intervals throughout the day as the parades progress along their routes.
Motorists are being strongly encouraged to use alternate routes and comply with directions from law enforcement personnel stationed along the affected corridors.
In addition to road closures, strict guidelines will be enforced during the parades. Police have warned that vehicles must be parked only in designated areas, noting that illegally parked vehicles will be impounded at the owner’s expense.
The advisory also prohibits vending along parade routes, as well as the use of firecrackers or other explosive devices. Participation in the parades by motor vehicles, pedal cyclists, quad bikes, and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) is not permitted.
Organisers and participants are further reminded that souvenirs and other items must not be distributed from trucks during the events.
For the Yard Mas and Xodus parade, Arthur Wint Drive will be closed between Mountain View Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue between 8:00 am and 10:00 am, with traffic diversions affecting Mountain View Avenue, Old Hope Road, and surrounding streets. Additional restrictions will follow along Hope Road and nearby intersections throughout the morning and midday periods.
Meanwhile, several closures will be implemented for the Xodus parade along Hope Road, Waterloo Road, and Trafalgar Road, extending to Lady Musgrave Road at different times between mid-morning and late afternoon. Traffic along adjoining roads will also be restricted during these periods.
The Gen X parade will trigger early closures along Knutsford Boulevard between Dominica Drive and Oxford Road starting at 8:00 am, with additional restrictions affecting Trafalgar Road, Hope Road, and Half-Way-Tree Road throughout the day. The parade is scheduled to culminate at Emancipation Park between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
Police say the measures are necessary to ensure public safety and the smooth staging of the Carnival activities. Members of the public are advised to exercise caution, expect delays, and make travel adjustments where necessary.
