St Jago 117-2 in reply to STETHS’s 487 before rain interruption
Rain brought an early end to the second day’s action of the ISSA/Grace all-island Spalding Cup, with St Jago High on 117-2 replying to St Elizabeth Technical High School’s (STETHS) massive total of 487 at the Melbourne Oval on Thursday.
Rural Headley Cup champions STETHS, coached by Carl Wright, resumed from the opening day on 438-6 and were bowled out for 487 after 92.4 overs.
Ryan Littleton added just three runs to his overnight 100 and was dismissed for 103. He hit six fours and four sixes from 90 balls, while batting for 114 minutes.
Adrian Silvera hit 51 as STETHS piled on the runs in what might prove a most daunting task for the Joseph Lemmie-coached St Jago High.
Five batsmen got past 50 runs as Captain Tyriek Bryan made 79, Shahiri Jaddo hit 77, and Jermari Bryce struck 66.
Raheem Willie took 4-58 from 12 overs, while West Indies Under-19 player Vitel Lawes conceded 179 runs from 39.4 overs for his four wickets.
The Jago coach was optimistic despite his team’s position.
“I’m very pleased with the fight that the boys have put up thus far. [To be] 117-2 from 36 overs means we are scoring runs as well as spending adequate time at the crease,” Lemmie said after play was called off on Thursday.
He noted that conditions remain good for batting.
“The pitch is flat, very good for batting. We just need to continue to be calculated in our shot making and selection. Going into tomorrow, the expectation is to continue batting and work with the momentum. As long as we do that and factor in the rain as well, the game will end in a tame draw or we will take first innings regardless of their mammoth total,” he said.
St Jago started their reply positively and reached 117-2 when rain interrupted the day’s proceedings after 36 overs. The urban Grace Shield champions are still 370 runs behind, with eight wickets in hand.
Danza Hyatt is to resume on 50 not out, having hit five fours and two sixes from 105 balls. Wayne Plummer is on 19 not out with two fours from 47 balls.
Luwayne Pryce went for 25, inclusive of four fours and batted for just over one hour before he was caught by Humario Reid off Delantae Scott, with the score on 53-1.
Then Samuel Burgher went for five, caught Humario Reid off Juwayne Lawson at 75-2. He batted for 104 minutes and faced 41 balls.
Delantae Scott has so far taken 1-12, while Juwayne Lawson has picked up 1-34.
Action is scheduled to resume at 9:30 am with St Jago facing the daunting task of overhauling STETHS’s total.
