TAJ moves to enforcement phase in property tax operations in Portmore and Spanish Town
Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ), in partnership with the Portmore and St Catherine municipal corporations, is advising the public that it has now advanced to the enforcement phase of its Property Tax Special Enforcement Operation conducted across several communities in Portmore and Spanish Town.
The joint operations were carried out June 6–8, 2025, and June 27–29, 2025, targeting delinquent property owners in Phoenix Park Village and Caribbean Estate in Portmore, as well as Green Acres, Frenchman Heights, Angel Estates, and Angel Grove
in Spanish Town. These operations formed part of a strategic initiative to improve property tax compliance and address longstanding arrears within the targeted communities.
To date, the tax authority has served more than 200 garnishment notices on financial institutions and employers of delinquent property owners, who failed to settle outstanding balances or enter into payment arrangements as at February 2026. TAJ
projects that an additional 150 garnishment notices will be served by the end April 2026 as enforcement efforts intensify.
The enforcement phase, originally scheduled to commence earlier, was temporarily delayed due to the passage of Hurricane Melissa, which impacted operational timelines.
As part of the escalated enforcement measures, TAJ is also actively exploring the seizure of moveable assets belonging to delinquent taxpayers, the placement of liens on properties and initiating legal proceedings, with over 50 property owners expected to be brought before the courts.
The tax authority is urging residents within the targeted communities who have outstanding property tax liabilities and have not yet made arrangements to visit their nearest tax office immediately to settle their accounts or establish a payment plan.
Failure to take the necessary steps to regularise outstanding balances will result in enforcement action being taken without further notice, the TAJ said.
